What is inside the pattern?

Two separate English PDFs: one for the jumper and one for the hat. The designer lists photographs and video instructions alongside the written patterns, giving you more than one way to follow the project.

Is this the right level for me?

Intermediate. The main stitch is half fisherman’s rib. This is a textured garment project with a neckband, button band and cuffs, plus a separate matching hat. Make a swatch in the stitch pattern before you begin, especially if this rib is new to you.

Which sizes are included?

Jumper sizes: 56, 62, 68, 74, 80, 86, 92, 98, 104, 110, 116 and 122. The designer’s age guide runs from newborn to approximately six years.

Hat sizes: 0–1, 1–3, 3–6, 6–9 and 9–12 months; 1–2, 2–3 and 3–5 years; and children aged five and over. Use the pattern’s measurements to choose the fit; age labels are a guide.

Materials needed

DK / 8-ply merino yarn, approximately 125–150 m per 50 g. Suggested yarns include Piu Bella TEBE 150, Lana Gatto Super Soft and Infinity Merino Extrafine.

Jumper: 3 mm circular needles, 80–100 cm long; 2.5 mm circular needles for the neckband, button band and cuffs. Hat: 3.5 mm short circular needles, 40 cm long, plus 3.5 mm long circulars or double-pointed needles for the crown.

You will also need markers, a tape measure, a tapestry/wool needle and a pom-pom maker if adding the pom-pom.

Jumper yarn, in size 56 / 62 / 68 / 74 / 80 / 86 / 92 / 98 / 104 / 110 / 116 / 122 order: approximately 350 / 400 / 450 / 500 / 550 / 600 / 650 / 700 / 730 / 770 / 800 / 850 m.

Hat yarn, from the smallest to largest hat size: 160 / 180 / 200 / 220 / 240 / 250 / 270 / 280 / 300 m. Add the jumper and hat amounts together when buying yarn for the complete set.

22 stitches × 50 rows = 10 × 10 cm in half fisherman’s rib on 3 mm needles, after blocking. Measure the blocked ribbed swatch rather than relying on the gauge printed on a yarn label.

Matching half fisherman’s rib jumper and hat set

Their colour. Your handiwork.

Choose the colour they will grow into.

A cream newborn set feels delicate; a deeper shade gives the same ribbed design a different personality. The matching hat brings the outfit together without needing to find a second pattern.

Make both pieces in one colour, or choose shades that work together. The texture is the detail that ties them together.

Before you begin

Choose the size, yarn and tools with the finished project in mind.

Matching half fisherman’s rib jumper and hat set

A little planning before you begin

Plan the whole set before buying yarn.

The jumper and hat have separate yarn allowances and use different needle sizes. Add both quantities before you shop, so the hat does not become an afterthought when the last ball runs low.

Blocking matters for this stitch. Check the half fisherman’s rib gauge first, then follow the measurements for the child’s size.

A few things before you begin

Intermediate. The main stitch is half fisherman’s rib. This is a textured garment project with a neckband, button band and cuffs, plus a separate matching hat. Make a swatch in the stitch pattern before you begin, especially if this rib is new to you.

Which size should I make?

Jumper sizes: 56, 62, 68, 74, 80, 86, 92, 98, 104, 110, 116 and 122. The designer’s age guide runs from newborn to approximately six years.

You will also need markers, a tape measure, a tapestry/wool needle and a pom-pom maker if adding the pom-pom.

What gauge should I aim for?

22 stitches × 50 rows = 10 × 10 cm in half fisherman’s rib on 3 mm needles, after blocking. Measure the blocked ribbed swatch rather than relying on the gauge printed on a yarn label.

Does the yarn amount cover both pieces?

No—the jumper and hat amounts are listed separately. For example, the smallest jumper uses approximately 350 m and the smallest hat 160 m, so those two pieces together require approximately 510 m. Choose the allowances for the sizes you are actually making.

Make their matching set in a colour you love.

Start with the size and yarn, then watch that distinctive rib become a jumper and hat made just for them.
