Cable Kerchief Knitting Pattern

Cable Kerchief Knitting Pattern

A small accessory with deeply textured cables

Knit a triangular scarf with softly raised cables and long ends that sit neatly around the neck. Three sizes let you keep it compact or make more of a shawl, while the repeating half-fisherman’s-rib fabric gives a familiar rhythm once the techniques are established.

What is inside the pattern?

English written directions, charts and a schematic for three sizes. Techniques are explained in detail, with instructions for adjusting dimensions.

The triangle uses half-fisherman’s-rib cables and an I-cord finish.

Is this the right level for me?

Confident beginner ready for textured knitting. Use a long-tail cast-on, half-fisherman’s rib with yarn overs, cable crosses, shaped increases, twisted decreases and an I-cord bind-off.

The repeat becomes familiar, but this is more involved than a plain garter scarf. Follow the technique explanations when learning the rib and cable combination.

Finished size & fit

Three sizes: small, medium and large. The largest can be worn as a shawl.

Height and width can be modified. Use the instructions for adjustments if you want a size smaller than the first option or need to work with a limited amount of yarn.

Materials needed

Choose a suitable DK-weight yarn for a soft, defined rib. Sample yarn options use approximately 75 / 100 / 175 g for small / medium / large; total length across the range is approximately 330–770 m.

3 mm needles, or the size that produces the desired fabric and gauge. Cable-working tools are needed for the crossing stitches. Yarn density varies, so compare meterage as well as weight when substituting.

The finished project

Choose the amount of scarf you want to wear

The compact version sits close around the neck. More fabric turns the same texture into a shawl-like layer, without changing the character of the cable pattern.

A plain colour gives the relief room to show. Swatch for softness and drape before deciding on the full size.

Your time with the needles

Find the rhythm in the rib and cables

The elongated triangle takes shape through increases, while the cable pattern adds depth to the half-fisherman’s-rib fabric.

Take time to establish the repeat and keep your place when you pause. The I-cord bind-off gives the edge a defined finish.

A few things before you begin

Choose your size, check your yarn and plan your first stitches.

Can I use less yarn than the smallest size?

Yes. Adjustment instructions let you make a smaller scarf. The finished dimensions will depend on your yarn and gauge.

Why does the gauge say worked rows?

Fisherman’s rib shows fewer visible rows than the number actually knitted. Count all worked rows when checking the 53-row gauge.

What gauge should I aim for?

27 stitches × 53 worked rows per 10 cm in the rib cable stitch, knitted flat and measured after washing and blocking.

Count all worked rows, not only the right-side rows visible in fisherman’s rib. A tighter gauge can make a denser fabric and change yarn requirements.
