What is inside the pattern?

English instructions for a junior sweater and vest in six sizes, with size-specific charts and a supporting video tutorial.

Print the instructions, legend and four charts for your chosen size: two front charts, a body chart and a sleeve chart. The full document contains charts for all sizes.

Is this the right level for me?

Intermediate. Knit, purl, increase, decrease, pick up stitches and follow cable charts.

Shape the back and front separately from the top, join the body in the round, then choose sleeves or vest edging. The V-neck band is added last with centred decreases.

Finished size & fit

Sizes: 4, 5, 6, 7–8, 9–10 and 11–12 years. Approximate heights: 104–110 / 110–116 / 116–122 / 122–134 / 134–146 / 146–158 cm.

Finished chest: 67.25 / 71 / 72.75 / 74.5 / 80 / 83.75 cm. Designed for approximately 10 cm positive ease. Choose by actual chest measurement and desired roominess, using age and height as guides.

Materials needed

Use fingering yarn around 170 m per 50 g held double. In size order, sweater total meterage: 1,020 / 1,190 / 1,275 / 1,445 / 1,615 / 1,785 m. Vest: 680 / 765 / 850 / 935 / 1,105 / 1,190 m.

These figures are the total fingering yarn needed across both strands and include a 10% margin. A single DK/light-worsted strand at matching gauge uses approximately half that meterage.

4.5 mm circular needles for body and sleeves; 3.5 mm circular needles, 60 or 80 cm, for ribbing. Adjust needle size to achieve gauge.

The finished project

A useful layer, with a cable that stands out

The V-neck leaves space for a T-shirt or shirt underneath. Long sleeves make a complete pullover; the vest finish gives the same cable panel a different place in a child’s wardrobe.

Check the finished chest before deciding on a size. The intended roominess is built into the garment measurements.

Your time with the needles

Make the charts work for you

Each size has its own chart set. Keep only the selected size’s instructions and legend beside you, so the page you follow is the page you need.

The back and front lead into a body worked in the round. Save attention for the crossing cable and shaping; the neckline ribbing comes after the main pieces are connected.

A few things before you begin

Choose your size, check your yarn and plan your first stitches.

Does it include the vest version?

Yes. Choose long sleeves for the sweater or a ribbed finish for the sleeveless vest.

Is the yarn meterage for one strand or both?

The listed fingering meterage is the total across both strands. For a single DK/light-worsted strand at the same gauge, use approximately half the listed length.

What gauge should I aim for?

22 stitches × 30 rows per 10 cm in stockinette after blocking.
