What is inside?

Written instructions take you through the ribbed cuffs, shaped hands and thumbs in six sizes, with a materials list, measurements, abbreviations and finishing guidance. Includes finished-project photos in a 2-page English PDF.

Which skills will I use?

You’ll use knit and purl, working in the round, lifted increases, holding stitches on waste yarn, picking up thumb stitches and binding off. A tubular bind-off is recommended for the ribbed edges. You should already be comfortable following written knitting abbreviations.

Choose by measurement

Sizes 2XS / XS / S / M / L / XL. Palm circumference, excluding thumb: 15 / 16 / 18 / 19 / 20 / 21 cm. Length: 15 / 16 / 19 / 20 / 23 / 23 cm. Compare these mitt measurements with the fit you want rather than choosing by age.

Yarn and needles

One 100 g ball of Rowan Cocoon (115 m; 80% merino, 20% mohair), or bulky yarn that achieves gauge. Use 4.5 and 5 mm circular needles long enough for magic loop, or double-pointed needles.

Made for the way you will wear them.

01

A cuff with substance

Deep 1×1 ribbing gives the wrist its distinctive texture.

02

Shape around the thumb

Lifted increases build the gusset before the thumb stitches are held aside.

03

A pair without seams

Work from the cuffs upward, then finish each thumb in the round.

Finished Cozy Mitts laid flat

The pair you reach for when the air turns chilly.

The smooth hand keeps the look simple; the ribbed edges give it definition. Choose a colour you will wear with your coat, or one that reminds you of the person you are knitting for. The open fingertips leave your fingers uncovered while the knitted fabric wraps the palm and wrist.

01

Concise written directions

Follow the written directions for your size from the ribbed cuff to the hand and thumb.

02

The shaping explained

Written directions and abbreviations cover the left and right lifted increases used for the gusset.

03

Finish both mitts alike

The second mitt follows the same directions. Weave in the ends and wet-block to finish.

From the cuff to the last thumb stitch.

A compact project with deliberate shaping, rather than a long strip to sew together.

01

Begin with ribbing

Cast on with the smaller needles and work the cuff in the round.

02

Shape the hand

Switch to larger needles, form the gusset with lifted increases and hold the thumb stitches aside.

03

Finish the openings

Rib and bind off the hand edge, then return to the thumb stitches and finish the thumb in the round.

Six sizes. Pick the measurements that suit.

All figures below follow 2XS / XS / S / M / L / XL.

Palm circumference

15 / 16 / 18 / 19 / 20 / 21 cm, measured around the palm without the thumb.

Mitt length

15 / 16 / 19 / 20 / 23 / 23 cm.

Compare the listed mitt measurements with the fit you want, then check your blocked gauge before casting on.

One ball, the right needles, your chosen colour.

The yarn specification is a starting point for a fabric that matches the pattern.

Yarn and notions

Rowan Cocoon: one 100 g ball, 115 m, 80% merino and 20% mohair. Alternatively choose bulky yarn that achieves gauge. You will also need stitch markers, a tapestry needle and scrap yarn.

Needles and gauge

4.5 mm and 5 mm needles for magic loop, or DPNs. Gauge: 16 stitches × 22 rows = 10 × 10 cm in stockinette after blocking.

When choosing another yarn, check its length per ball and your blocked gauge.

Will my fingers and thumbs be covered?

Your fingertips stay uncovered. Each mitt has an open hand edge and a short, ribbed thumb, keeping the palm and wrist wrapped while leaving your fingers free.

Do I need to read charts?

No. The mitts use written instructions and abbreviations. Follow the numbers for your chosen size through the cuff, gusset, hand and thumb.

Are the left and right mitts different?

Both mitts follow the same directions, so you can repeat the first mitt’s construction for the second.

Can I use a different bulky yarn?

Yes, if it gives 16 stitches × 22 rows per 10 cm in stockinette after blocking. The recommended yarn is Rowan Cocoon, 115 m per 100 g ball. Compare yarn length as well as weight when planning a substitute.

Do I have to sew the mitts together?

No. The hand and thumb are knitted in the round. Finish by weaving in the yarn ends and wet-blocking the mitts.

Make your everyday warmth.

Choose your size, swatch your bulky yarn and cast on the ribbed cuffs. The next pair you reach for can be the pair you made.
