What is included?

Instructions for both the romper and matching hat, with written directions, charts and construction photos. Technique video links help with selected romper steps, and illustrated instructions show how to make the optional pompom. Includes two English PDFs: 36 pages for the romper and 10 for the hat.

Which skills will I use?

You’ll work flat and in the round, follow knit-and-purl texture, make cable crossings, increase and decrease, pick up stitches, work buttonholes and finish small seams. The romper also uses back-neck shaping. This project suits knitters comfortable combining textured stitches with garment shaping.

Which sizes are covered?

Romper: 56 (0–1 month), 62 (1–3 months), 68 (3–6 months), 74 (6–9 months), 80 (9–12 months), 86 (12–24 months) and 92 (2T). The hat has nine sizes from 0–1 month through children aged 5+, with head circumferences 34–56 cm.

What yarn and needles do I need?

Aran yarn, 90 m per 50 g. Recommended options include 100% merino yarns. Romper: approximately 450–880 m, plus 3 and 4 mm circular needles. Hat: 110–220 m and 4 mm needles. Hat yarn is additional to the romper amount; each piece has its own gauge.

A matching set, with every detail considered.

01

An outfit, not just one piece

Knit the romper and matching hat in the same yarn and colour for a coordinated result.

02

Texture from knit and purl

The herringbone motif is an eight-row repeat. The romper adds cable crossings along its shaping lines.

03

Details to finish carefully

A button front, ribbed cuffs and a folded hat brim complete the pieces.

Matching herringbone hat with folded brim and pompom

Make the matching hat part of the gift.

The hat carries the same herringbone texture into a smaller project, with a generous folded brim and an optional pompom. Its size range extends beyond the romper’s, so choose it by the wearer’s head measurement rather than assuming both pieces use identical labels.

01

Written steps and charts

Follow the texture in written repeats or charts, with extra size-specific charts for the romper.

02

Photos where the work changes

Construction photographs illustrate shaping, held stitches, joins and finishing. The romper’s technique links open external videos.

03

Help reading your knitting

Learn how the knit-and-purl rhythm forms the motif, so you can recognise the pattern already on your needles.

Build the outfit one part at a time.

The romper starts at the neck; the hat starts at its brim.

01

Shape the romper from the top

Begin with the ribbed neckline and raglan yoke, then separate the sleeve stitches and continue the body.

02

Finish the romper

Join the lower body in the round, shape the gusset and legs, then work the sleeves and button bands. Small seams and button sewing remain.

03

Knit the matching hat

Work the textured hat in the round, shape the crown and fold the brim. Add a pompom if you choose.

Choose each piece’s size separately.

Choose the romper from its seven size labels and match the hat to the wearer’s head circumference. Use ages as a guide, not a substitute for measuring.

Romper sizes

56: 0–1 month
62: 1–3 months
68: 3–6 months
74: 6–9 months
80: 9–12 months
86: 12–24 months
92: 2T

Hat: age / head circumference

0–1 month: 34–36 cm
1–3 months: 37–38 cm
3–6 months: 39–42 cm
6–9 months: 43–46 cm
9–12 months: 47–48 cm
1–2 years: 49–50 cm
2–3 years: 51–52 cm
3–5 years: 53–54 cm
5+ years: 55–56 cm

For the hat, measure above the eyebrows and around the most prominent part of the back of the head. The romper size range ends at 92 (2T); the hat range continues to 5+ years.

Plan enough yarn for both pieces.

Choose aran yarn with approximately 90 m per 50 g. Recommended options include 100% merino yarns such as Lana Gatto Maxi Soft.

Romper yarn by size

For 56 / 62 / 68 / 74 / 80 / 86 / 92:
approximately 450 / 550 / 650 / 720 / 780 / 830 / 880 m.

Hat yarn by size

For 0–1m / 1–3m / 3–6m / 6–9m / 9–12m / 1–2y / 2–3y / 3–5y / 5+y:
110 / 120 / 140 / 150 / 160 / 170 / 180 / 200 / 220 m.

For the complete outfit, add together the amounts for your chosen romper size and hat size.

Two pieces. Two gauges to check.

Measure both swatches after blocking. Each piece uses the gauge below in stockinette and in the herringbone texture.

Romper

20 stitches × 28 rows = 10 × 10 cm on 4 mm needles. Use 3 mm needles for the neckband, button bands and cuffs. The circular cables are 80–100 cm.

Hat

21 stitches × 28 rows = 10 × 10 cm on 4 mm needles. Use a 40 cm circular needle plus a longer circular or DPNs for small circumferences and the crown.

Swatch for each piece: the romper needs 20 stitches per 10 cm and the hat needs 21. Adjust needle size to achieve each gauge.

Have the finishing pieces ready.

For the romper: a cable needle, stitch markers, tape measure, tapestry needle, waste yarn for held stitches, and 18–20 mm buttons. For the hat: markers, tape measure and a wool needle; add a pompom-making tool if making the optional pompom. Yarn, buttons, tools and the optional pompom are not included.

Am I buying the outfit or the instructions?

You’re buying knitting instructions for both pieces, in English. Make the button-front romper and matching hat yourself using your own yarn, needles and finishing materials.

How much sewing is involved?

The romper is worked mainly from the top down and in the round. Finishing includes closing the small opening between the legs, securing the bottom edges of the button bands and sewing on the buttons.

Can I follow written instructions instead of a stitch chart?

The herringbone motif is written row by row as well as charted. Written construction directions guide each piece, with additional size-specific charts for the romper.

Should I choose the same age size for both pieces?

Check each piece separately. The romper runs through size 92 (2T), while the hat continues to 5+ years. For the hat, use the head-circumference measurements to choose the fit.

What guidance is included for the shaping and finishing?

Construction photos show the work at key stages, and the romper instructions include links to technique videos. The hat includes illustrated pompom instructions. You’ll need an internet connection to watch the linked videos.

Can I make the hat without a pompom?

Yes. The pompom is optional. Finish the shaped crown and fold the brim for a hat without one.
