What is inside the pattern?

One English PDF, 18 file pages. Written garment directions, a finished-measurement table, yarn allowances, an abbreviation guide and a photo sequence for the flower technique. Linked videos cover flowers in ribbing and in the round, joining sleeves to the body, working flowers through the raglan decreases and an elastic bind-off.

Is this the right level for me?

Intermediate. You will work knit and purl stitches, twisted rib, yarn overs, increases and decreases, flower stitches, knitting in rows and in the round, picking up a button band and finishing the underarms. The flower technique has photo steps and linked video demonstrations to revisit as you work.

Which size should I make?

Choose by chest measurement, with up to 5 cm of positive ease. The figures below describe the finished, washed cardigan. Body length is measured from the underarm. Sleeve figures are reproduced from the PDF’s sizing table; check the sleeve on the child while working and adjust its length.

  • 6–12 months: chest 50 cm; body from underarm 14 cm; sleeve 21 cm.
  • 12–18 months: chest 55 cm; body from underarm 15.5 cm; sleeve 23 cm.
  • 2 years: chest 60 cm; body from underarm 16 cm; sleeve 29 cm.
  • 4 years: chest 65 cm; body from underarm 19 cm; sleeve 35.5 cm.
  • 6 years: chest 71 cm; body from underarm 23 cm; sleeve 40.5 cm.
  • 8 years: chest 76 cm; body from underarm 25.5 cm; sleeve 42 cm.
  • 10 years: chest 81 cm; body from underarm 28 cm; sleeve 44 cm.

For example, a child with a 63 cm chest would use the 65 cm finished chest size. The sleeve and body lengths can be adjusted separately.

Wildflower children's cardigan with raised floral texture

The detail you will love making

Little flowers, right down to the cuffs.

The flower texture is knitted into the fabric, giving the cardigan its raised petals and playful character. Small flowers continue into the ribbing, so the detail feels considered from the cuffs to the button front.

The PDF shows the flower technique in photographs, with linked videos for working the motifs in different parts of the cardigan.

From the sleeves to the final button

Know how it comes together

Sleeves first. Then a cardigan takes shape.

Knit the sleeves separately in the round and the body flat in rows. Join them on one needle, then work the raglan decreases while continuing the flower pattern.

Pick up the front bands, choose your button spacing and finish the small underarm openings with mattress stitch. The photo and video guidance is especially useful where the textured pieces join.

Make the fit a choice before you cast on.

Age is a starting point. The child’s chest measurement and your washed swatch make a better plan.

Finished measurements

A few things before you begin

The flower stitches, fit and finishing—clear before the first row.

What is included?

Do I need to sew the pieces together?

The sleeves and body join on the needle for the raglan yoke. You will close the small underarm openings with mattress stitch, weave in ends and sew on the buttons. The button bands are picked up and knitted onto the front edges.

Can I change the length or yarn?

Yes. Choose the chest size first, then adjust body or sleeve length to suit the child. Allow at least 50 g more yarn for a longer cardigan. For a different yarn, match the washed gauge of 21 stitches per 10 cm and check that you like the fabric.

How much time should I allow?

Work at a pace that suits you, allowing time for the sleeves, body, raglan yoke and finishing. If this is a gift, leave room to practise the flower stitch, wash your swatch and dry the finished cardigan before giving it.

How do I get the pattern?

Your PDF is available after payment through the order confirmation page and download email. Keep the file so you can return to the directions and technique links while you knit.

Choose their colour. Knit their little field of flowers.

Start with the measurements and a washed swatch, then bring those raised petals onto your needles, one flower at a time.
